As a PRS Intern at On Our Own, Charlottesville, you will gain experience

  • Connecting individuals to community support resources

  • Providing individual peer support

  • Helping individuals navigate the mental health/ substance use and physical health systems

  • Empowering others through the teaching of self-advocacy skills

  • Receiving and giving support founded upon mutual respect

  • Encouraging others to work through fear to the pursuit of their personal goals and aspirations

  • Aiding others in the development of their wellness and action plans

  • Assisting in our Harm Reduction and Street Outreach programs

  • Providing support to our peer recovery groups

PRS Specialists are valued members of the On Our Own team, and collaborate in a supportive environment that encourages multiple pathways to recovery.

PRS Specialists work under the supervision of the Program Supervisor and On Our Own Peer Recovery Specialists.

Internship location: Charlottesville, VA

Flexible Hours: Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm

This is a volunteer/ unpaid internship

On Our Own’s mission is to provide a solid basis for recovery from mental illness and substance use through promoting the evidence-based practice of peer support and wellness promotion.

Peer Support Specialist interns support our goal to encourage program participants to work together to empower themselves and others in the pursuit of increased self-worth, control, and independence.

The Peer Support intern must act in a professional manner and actively contribute to On Our Own’s mission, which is to provide free peer support, self-help, education, guidance, advocacy, and referral services for adults who acknowledge that they have experienced significant have problems in their lives due to challenges with mental health, substance use, or trauma.
