Creativity

Attention writers, music lovers, and artists of all kinds! Express yourself in a supportive, non-judgmental environment with your fellow travelers. No experience necessary. We will start off in a semi-structured way with a series of prompts, and then quickly move to a free exploration of different media. Process your lived experience through art! We check in to talk about our work, our challenges and successes, and if/when you’re ready, share your work with the group.

Facilitated by Nina Burke, fabulous local visual artist.

Please note that this is now an in-person group.

Monday 1pm to 2pm

Anger Management

Explore, learn, and develop new strategies to help manage anger and other emotions. Anger is a normal, healthy reaction to the world, and in itself is neither good nor bad. It signals to us that a situation is upsetting, unjust, or threatening. In certain circumstances, however, anger and similar emotions can overcome our ability to address the very thing that is causing our strong reactions. And sometimes, our reactions can make the problem worse by hurting ourselves or others. In this group, we explore how to manage our strong reactions to the world, and use their power for positive change.

Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) GROUP

Note: this is an in-person group held at the house!

Wellness Recovery Action Plan or WRAP is an evidence-based practice used worldwide by people dealing with mental health or general health challenges. WRAP focuses on self-empowerment for wellness and wholeness rather than illness and sickness, and is a wellness and recovery approach that helps people to: 1) decrease and prevent intrusive or troubling feelings and behaviors, 2) increase personal empowerment, 3) improve quality of life, and 4) achieve their own life goals and dreams. WRAP is a structured system to monitor uncomfortable and distressing symptoms that can help you reduce, modify or eliminate those symptoms by using planned responses. This includes plans for how you want others to respond when symptoms have made it impossible for you to continue to make decisions, take care of yourself or keep yourself safe.

Please note that this is an in person group that we host at the house.

Low On Groceries?

Remember that our food pantry is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2pm to 5pm. We are grateful to the Emergency Food Network, without whose generous aid month after month, and year after year, we would be unable to provide for our members. We are also grateful to Albemarle Baking Company and to Starbucks (on 5th Street, and at Pantops) for their generous donations. Pastries, paninis, cookies, muffins sandwiches, and more are available for free. When you arrive, we’ll give you a menu of available items. You make your selections, and we’ll pack a bag for you! As this is an in-person service, please wear a mask so that our masked staff can ensure a safe, touchless service for all our members.

Members are welcome to hang out on the front porch as long as everyone is abiding by social distancing rules.

Please call (434) 979-2440 for more information, or if you need food and cannot come during pantry hours.
